- How to get to Pompeii from Naples
1) History Geography of Pompeii
The history of Pompeii is directly related to the history of Vesuvius. Mount Vesuvius towers over the Bay of Naples, 1280 m high. It is one of the rare volcanoes in Europe still active (with Etna and Stromboli), the last eruption dates from less than 1944; currently, there are about 700 earthquakes a year and permanent fumaroles.
From the archaeological site of Pompeii, Vesuvius is almost always part of the landscape ...
Vesuvius is especially dangerous because it is explosive, with a very large population at its feet (4 million inhabitants), so it is under constant surveillance.
A particularly famous eruption in AD 79. C., destroyed and buried the sumptuous city of Pompeya and Herculano; The vast and moving ruins of Pompeii are an incredible testament to a Roman imperial city. Here is a super interesting video about this disaster:
Therefore, a visit to Pompeii is a must see. On the other hand, expect to see a lot of people, it is often advisable to take your ticket in advance on the network, it is up to you, for the ticket + the Naples train or here for the simple ticket.
You can also contact Elivra (link), Katia (French archaeologist in Pompeii - link) or Ada (link) who offer guided tours of Pompeii.
You can also opt for a ticket that allows you to be picked up directly from your hotel in Naples, transportation to Pompeii, skip-the-line ticket, and guided tour! if you are interested or here.
2) Visit Pompeii
For its Tour de Pompeya, here are some smart tips:
Get there early if possible (site opens at 8:30 am), it will be much less hot and less crowded! For my part, I booked the Pompeii skip-the-line ticket in advance and believe me, you should do the same (for the ticket + train from Naples or here for the simple ticket).
For the Herculaneum, skip the line.
In any case, this famous site is very busy, so expect it to be full, it is often advisable to take your ticket in advance on the network, it is up to you, for the ticket + train. from Naples or here for the single ticket.
For the Herculaneum, skip the line.
If you are looking for a ticket to visit Pompeii and Vesuvius from Sorrento ,.
You can also contact Elivra (link), Katia (French archaeologist in Pompeii - link) or Ada (link) who offer guided tours of Pompeii.
If you arrive in the middle of the morning, you may mix with groups of tourists, which is not very good. In this case it is better to start in the early afternoon. Otherwise, start the Tour de Pompeya through the vineyards, the amphitheater and the villas because that's what tourists do… And you end up with the Forum and the must-see monuments.
Hours: From April 1 to October 31, open from 8:30 a.m. to 19:30 p.m. From November 1 to March 31, open from 8:30 a.m. to 17 p.m.
I remind you that there are 2 tickets for your visit to Pompeii (see map), the main one is the access to Marina Gate, near Pompéi Scavi station and the Circumvesuviana train (in fact, the train that comes from Naples stops at Scavi Di Pompéi - Pompéi Villa Dei Misteri stop). So the ideal would be to start with this entry (green icon on the left of the map below) but as I said in this article, there is an amazing queue (so take your Skip-the-line entrance to Pompeii ).
The entrance ticket is 13 euros, with 1/2 price from 18 to 24 years old, free for under 18 years in the EU. As I told you, a skip-the-line ticket is not much because, as you can imagine, there are quite a lot of people on sunny days.
Be careful not to leave the site during the visit, your ticket would no longer be valid, for the ticket + train from Naples or here only for the skip-the-line ticket.
For the Herculaneum, skip the line.
On the other hand, the site is very large (12 ha visitable in 60 ha, bigger than the Vatican site, perfectly!), Count 1/2 day or more, with water, hat and sunscreen!
If you are a bit lost, you can easily find your way thanks to Vesuvius to the north!
Given the richness of this ancient site, you can help either with an audio guide to take with you at the entrance, for 7 euros, or even a guided tour (), with if you want a departure from your hotel:

- Visit of Pompeii from Naples with guide. (link)
- Excursion to Vesuvius - leaving Naples (link) or here to do it in private with Katia (guide).
- For the Herculaneum, skip the line.
As I told you, the sumptuous city of Pompeii was completely buried in 79 after the terrible eruption of Vesuvius; The site of Pompeii is absolutely extraordinary!
Not to be missed during your visit to Pompeii:
- The forum
- The stab baths
- The Grand Theater, the Petit Theater
- La Villa des Mysteres (fabulous)
- The magnificent Maison de Vetti, the House of Chaste Lovers,
El Lupanar (old closed house with incredible erotic frescoes !!)
The cool-brothel-pomp:
The sumptuous Maison de Ménandre, the Amphitheater, the Orchard of the Fugitives ... etc ...
See the Antiquarium where the casts of men and women trapped by lava in their last poses are exposed! Brrr! I assure you, it is very shocking and disturbing.
So allow at least 3-4 hours of visits minimum, so feel free to take a guided tour, it's really fascinating and worth it!

4) How to get to Pompeii from Naples
Little information that can help you if you have suitcases with you: there is in the Pompeii station, the small bar of the station that offers a luggage storage service for 2 euros in its rear store, so it is not really a very safe but very practice anyway.
Coming from Naples, there are several possibilities for your visit to Pompeii and Vesuvius:
- Getting to Pompeii by train:
From Naples, there are 3 train lines that depart from Naples Central Station corresponding to the 3 Pompeii train stations located at the 3 accesses in Pompeii, I especially recommend the following train:
The Circumvesuviana suburban train (to take at the Garibaldi central station in Naples), stops at the Pompei Scavi station (Villa dei Misteri), every 25 minutes, € 3,20 and counts 35 minutes for the trip. This is the main access to the site (Porta Marina Grande) with more services (counter, left-luggage office, audio guide). Instead, take this train.
For your information, you also have the TrenItalia main line train, (leaving from Garibaldi station in Naples) 40 minute journey, stop at Pompei Santuario station; your interest, in my opinion, is that you continue to the extraordinary Amalfi Coast (see my article Visiting the Amalfi Coast).
If you want your skip-the-line ticket + your train ticket, you also have a combo ticket that allows you to take a guided tour of Pompeii and Vesuvius from Naples (.
For the Herculaneum, skip the line.
- Getting to Pompeii by bus
By the Sita company of the port of Naples. Be careful, these buses are a little less reliable than the Circumvesiana train that I recommend.
Anyway, you have 3 options: CSTP n ° 4 from Salerno, SITA from Salerno or Napoli, and CSTP express from Salerno (which as the name suggests Express is faster).
- Pompeii and Naples day trip from Rome
If you are in Rome and want to do a Pompeii excursion from Naples for a day, and look at the reviews.
You can also contact Elivra (link), Katia (French archaeologist in Pompeii - link) or Ada (link) who offer guided tours of Pompeii .
If you want to go on your own. And so, to do Rome in one day (although I would recommend spending a night in Naples or Sorrento to visit the Amalfi or Naples side), you have to take the train at Rome Termini station. There are trains very often (€ 15 and a 2-3 hour trip to Naples (Garibaldi) station.
From there, take the Vesuvian circum (ticket € 2,80) towards Sorrento. Attention, there are 2 stations Pompeii ... Pompeii villa des mystères (the ruins) and Pompeii (the city ...) but hey to go to Pompeii the city is longer (there is a change) so I think you will pass yourself in the villa of the mysteries of Pompeii.
And once again, book at least the Pompeii skip-the-line ticket to save time!
Well there you go, I think you have all the keys in hand to visit pompeii as it should be
