1) History / Geography of Mauritius

Known for its paradisiacal beaches, sunsets, corals and luxury hotels, Mauritius is a volcanic island with varied landscapes.

The people of Mauritius come from different cultures and religions, the three main ones being Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.

Cohabiting in harmony, its population is very welcoming, warm and open-minded. It is also an opportunity to discover the Creole, Indian, Chinese cuisines full of flavors and spices and the many temples and churches of the island.

Discover this little gem nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean, a dream destination to visit in a week or two for the lucky ones.

Here's a little video from Échappées Belles:

2) What to visit in Mauritius

Once you have arrived at the Mauritius airport, it is in Flic-en-Flac where I advise you to stay to start, in fact it occupies a fairly central position for the different visits to Mauritius that are going to be made. during the stay: Black River National Park, Chamarel (the land of the 7 colors), Casella Park, stoup island, etc.

Let's look at this in more detail:

What to visit in Mauritius - South side:

  • Visit the holy water fountain

The island of Bénitier is located in the southwest of Mauritius, it is shaped like a fountain, hence its name:

Plan a day for this catamaran excursion departing from La Gaulette or Tamarin (located a 20-minute drive from Flic en Flac). Companies change regularly, I advise you to check once there. Some companies will offer you to go by speedboat.

If you are looking for activities on a catamaran or here.

The interest of the catamaran lies in the promenade and of course in the observation of the dolphins that will approach the boat during the morning. The calm of the catamaran is appreciable and restorative.

  • The program:

- Departure in the morning on a catamaran with capacity for about 20 people, to get to know the surroundings and the dolphins.

At noon, the barbecue is prepared by the crew members in good spirits and a bit of Creole or Sega music to set the mood.

While the barbecue heats up, it's an opportunity to jump off the catamaran to swim with the mask and snorkel and discover the multicolored corals and fish nested in shallow, translucent waters.

A stopover is planned on a beach on the island of the holy water fountain, some vendors will approach you to buy some souvenirs. Then the return is scheduled for the afternoon.

There is also an 8-hour program that allows you to swim with dolphins from Tamarin Bay (west of the island, not far from Flic en Flac), then go to Ile aux Cerfs, to reach the Aquarium dive site which is ideal For beginner divers, this site is located in the Trou d'Eau Douce lagoon in the east of the island (.

  • Visit the blowing bridge

Be careful, this is a secret place that is difficult to access and that not even all Mauritians know about. It is found after passing through immense sugar cane fields and even a large sugar cane factory.

The trail is rough and steep and you wonder if you are on the trail sometimes. If possible, avoid going by rental car unless you are reckless - check with the locals who could accompany you there for a reasonable price.

We had the opportunity to meet the locals who took us on their mini bus!

/! If you need a French-speaking driver to move around Mauritius, do not hesitate to contact Nus here, he offers tours of 1, 2 or 3 days to discover the island. For example, you can select 2 days and use these services on a Monday and a Thursday for example ... Do not hesitate to ask for a customized tour, know the island like the back of your hand.

Away from the sandy beaches and the lagoon, this wild side of the island (in the south) will amaze you with its rugged rocks and rough ocean. This rejuvenating and invigorating place offers a magnificent view of the ocean and the waves crash against the cliff.

Walking on this natural bridge is not recommended, but the temptation is too great! I can only advise you caution and a good balance!

And there you will return with photos of Mauritius that few tourists bring back!

  • Casela Park

3 kilometers from Flic-en-Flac, in the south-west of Mauritius, the Casela Nature Park offers you 14 hectares of flora and fauna discovery from a sometimes original angle: safari by jeep, segway, quad or safari vehicle which is the least expensive solution.

Many walks can also be done on foot, and they allow you to enter certain enclosures (no, not the lions, that's an option!).

The restaurant offers a menu at 32 euros and vegetarians have their own menu based on grilled or curried vegetables, rice, hearts of palm, etc. But be careful, remember to book in advance if you want to have lunch at the restaurant.

The decoration is impressive, you can easily spend the day or a good half day.

The various animals will accompany you throughout your journey: lions, zebras, giraffes, giant tortoises, exotic birds etc ... that will delight children and adults!

For the more adventurous, you have the option of zip-lining or cannon swing (bungee jumping). The entrance to the park is around 22/25 euros. Activities are extra of course.

  • Rio Negro National Park (Rivière Noire)

Also in the southwest of Mauritius, the Black River gorges are worth a visit. The decor is sumptuous. You pass through a field of banana trees, through hiking trails and the panoramas are fabulous. For lovers of nature, flowers, birds, this hike is a must!

And that changes a bit from the beach!

For about fifty euros you have the option of hiring a guide for a 5-hour walk with lunch included.

At the foot of this waterfall, some children will ask you for some coins to watch them dive ... it is quite dangerous so avoid encouraging them.

Not far away, you can also take a boat cruise to swim with the dolphins and have dinner on the boat, really to do!

  • Tamarindo and its salt flats

In the southwest of Mauritius, facing the beach of Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin is a much less touristy fishing village that also offers a beautiful beach and a different view of Le Morne.

This quiet town on the edge of the Rio Negro is especially frequented by Mauritians and is an opportunity to mingle with the locals.

If you go in the morning at sunrise you will see the women collecting salt from the salt flats, if you go in the afternoon you will see a beautiful sunset.

  • Macondé and its famous rock

The famous Macondé rock is accessed by a staircase, which offers a panoramic view of the entire south coast. Note that the ladder is along the main road, in the middle of a curve, with no parking.

Visible from afar, take the time to find a place to park and get there on foot (watch out for speeding cars). There too, many stray dogs will sometimes accompany you to the top of the stairs.

A must visit to Macondé Fast Food will allow you to discover the local cuisine in a rather kitsch environment but so different from what we know in France. And for a ridiculous price! Their fried mine is to die for!

A walk on the beach will allow you to meet some fishermen, a chance to buy your dinner!

  • So what is Mine Frit?

I talk about it several times in the article. It's simply a Mauritian dish made with Chinese stir fry noodles, chicken, shrimp, bok choy, carrots, soy, omelette, and spices of course. A real pleasure !

  • Mercado de Quatre-Bornes

Quatre-Bornes is a large city in Mauritius, quite central. This is the opportunity to take a short walk to the market that will immerse you in the heart of Mauritius. You won't be able to resist buying some cheap souvenirs or textiles. Beware of fakes.

Market days are Thursdays and Sundays for textiles and souvenirs and Wednesdays and Saturdays for fruits, vegetables and spices.

This market is also becoming more and more famous and attracting more and more tourists but its authenticity makes it a typical market to absolutely see.

  • Chamarel, the land of the 7 colors and its waterfall

In the southwest of Mauritius, this natural curiosity attracts tourists and for good reason.

The Land of Seven Colors, located near Black River National Park, takes its name from the presence of volcanic ash that contains 7 color variations, from ocher to brown, from purple to red.

Located in a private place, there is a charge for entry, around 5 euros. To get there, you pass through a magnificent viewpoint of the Chamarel waterfall.

And of course, don't leave without a little detour to the Chamarel rum factory, which makes an organic agricultural rum, just to bring a little souvenir!

  • Deer island

The Ile aux Cerfs is a must if you are staying in Mauritius. It is one of the most beautiful places and the most famous destination. It is located within the Trou d'Eau Douce lagoon on the east coast.

If you want to enjoy the Ile aux Cerfs at your own pace, opt for the Trou d'Eau Douce water taxi which will take you quickly for around 12 euros.

I chose the speedboat option with lunch included on the island at noon (a vegetarian meal is also offered) and visit of the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall and of course free time on Île aux Cerfs. . We found a great beach on the coast opposite the souvenir shops.

All-inclusive excursion for about thirty euros. Bring a small jacket, it is very windy on the boat.

Take advantage of this day to discover parasailing! This activity will be offered to you for about 25 euros.

/! If you need a French speaking driver to get around Mauritius, do not hesitate to contact Nus here, he offers tours of 1, 2 or 3 days to discover the island.

For example, you can select 2 days and use these services on a Monday and a Thursday for example ... Do not hesitate to ask for a tailor-made tour, know the island like the back of your hand.

  • If you are looking for ideas for activities in Mauritius or here.

In the south of Mauritius (near the Black River), Grand Bassin is a sacred place for the many Hindu inhabitants of the island. Once a year, a pilgrimage gathers up to 500 people, many of whom come on foot and walk for 000/2 days to reach the temple.

In addition, we were surprised to see many colorful processions parading all over the island (googleMap link).

The temple is bordered by a lake and, on the fun side, you will be surprised to see free monkeys that will gladly come to eat the few fruits that you have brought them!

  • Deer hole

Located between Curepipe and Quatre-Bornes in central Mauritius, this ancient volcano offers a magnificent panorama of the region. The crater is filled with a small lake, the vegetation is abundant!

Beware of slippery trails when it rains; And it often rains in Curepipe! If you have a chance to walk there in good weather, the show will be even better!

  • If you are looking for ideas for activities in Mauritius or here.

  • The Pamplemousses Garden (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden) and the Sugar Museum

This time we leave for the north of Mauritius, to discover the wonderful Pamplemousse gardens created in the XNUMXth century by the French Pierre Poivre.

With the help of the guide from the entrance to the gardens, discover the numerous species of tropical trees, palms, baobabs, guavas, etc ... The giant water lilies will surprise you.

The guide is not mandatory, but I highly recommend it! The price of the guided tour and the entrance will be around 7 euros. Attention ! It is a hot and humid environment, a tropical environment !!!

So…. Mosquito paradise !!! Opt for an outfit that covers but light: pants and long-sleeved shirt.

There you will also find giant tortoises on both sides.

After this tour amidst giant trees and all these exotic plants, head over to the Sugar Museum (And yes, Mauritius is full of sugar cane fields that you will necessarily have crossed since you arrived.

For an entry of 10 euros, plan between 1h30 to 3 hours of visit if you choose the detailed visit. Tasting of sugars, honey and rum on the program!

  • If you are looking for ideas for activities in Mauritius or here.
  • Cap Malheureux

Why this name? Located in the north of Mauritius, numerous shipwrecks have occurred there. It is also the place where the English landed to take possession of the island in the early XNUMXth century.

This picturesque town is famous for its pretty red-roofed church, Notre Dame Auxiliatrice. On Sundays, many locals attend mass and you are no stranger to buying fruit or fish from street vendors and fishermen who have just come down with their boats.

This small town is also home to a Hindu temple and, from the beach, you have a magnificent view of Coin de Mire, a small islet in the north of the island.

  • An excursion from Grand Baie

Why not take a day cruise from Grand Baie and discover Gabriel Island? On the catamaran menu, diving, barbecue, fresh fish, chicken and salads, unlimited drinks, you may have the opportunity to meet dolphins (.

  • Passport to visit Mauritius:

Of course, you will need a valid passport to enter the territory of Mauritius.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be asked for the name of the place where you will be staying. If you are a bit of a backpacker and have not planned anything, especially indicate the name of a hotel anyway, at the risk of being blocked at customs. You will also be asked for your return date and you must reserve your return ticket.

We make the request to the City Council, leaving enough time depending on the City Council where the request is made. Optionally, the information can be found at service public.fr. The best is to get information from the town hall, I think

  • Health in Mauritius:

No specific vaccine is needed. By cons, plan a good mosquito repellent !!! Preferably special tropic and soothing cream because even the best mosquito repellent will not stop the most motivated, I have experienced it ...

The essential sunscreen will of course be your best ally (avoid spreading it just before swimming to less pollute the water, there are many corals).

As for the doctors, there are quite a few, and also some clinics and dispensaries. Plan the essentials nonetheless (antihistamines for allergy sufferers, painkillers, etc.).

  • Good to know in Mauritius:

The duration of the flight from France to Mauritius is 11 hours, but 2 important advantages for this heavenly destination:

Although the official language is English, Mauritians speak French. Get out of the language barrier, you can understand and make yourself understood without using sign language!

The time difference is only 3 hours maximum in winter (2 hours in summer).

The area of Mauritius is 1865 km2, the longest distance from one point to another on the island is about 65 km. Therefore, we can easily cross the island to spend a day on the other side. The capital, Port-Louis, is located in the northwest of the island.

One of the emblems of Mauritius is the dodo, a strange bird unable to fly, sadly missing, victim of hunting. You will find many souvenirs, wooden figurines, beach towels and sarongs with his effigy.

  • What to pack to visit Mauritius?

I'll pass you the classic shorts and swimsuits ... Remember to wear coats and light clothing: pants and long-sleeved top for outings to the gardens of Pamplemousses for example ... Always those damn mosquitoes ...

Also plan a life jacket for sometimes cold afternoons and a light rain suit for hikes in the Mauritius interior; It rains more frequently than on the coast, although only a few tens of kilometers separate you from the beaches.

  • Weather in Mauritius:

Mauritius enjoys a subtropical climate. The cooler season begins in July and ends in September. The temperature can still go up to 24 degrees.

The climate is more humid and rainy in the center of Mauritius, on the Curepipe side mainly where it rains very often.

The best season to travel to Mauritius is from November to March, although the weather is pleasant throughout the year.

  • Safety in Mauritius:

It is good to live in Mauritius, so there is no particular security issue. Of course, like everywhere, stay alert and don't leave your bags unattended on the beach, but it's just common sense.

More and more surveillance cameras are being installed on public beaches and on the streets.

There are a lot of stray dogs on the streets and on the beach, but they are incredibly quiet and don't go near people. They are used to being ignored and they are not aggressive at all! Avoid stroking them anyway because they are not kept, washed, or cared for.

Powerful ocean currents routinely cause disappearances and drownings

  • Currency update:

The currency is the Mauritian rupee, of course, you will find exchange offices on site.

Life is cheap, especially if you avoid fancy hotels and live locally. It is not uncommon to find a small restaurant for 4 euros a meal, fried mine and drink included.

  • Rental accommodation:

If you choose to rent an apartment or villa to an individual, make sure especially that there is no construction nearby. Mauritius is developing and a lot of construction works are underway.

A friend was shocked to be woken up every morning at 6 am by workers who were building a residence 3 feet from his room.

Also make sure the accommodation is not too isolated as it is the festival of the stray dogs at night and their barking will haunt your nights!

The roads are not illuminated at night and the sun sets at 18 pm… Access to your accommodation should be quick and easy.

  • Get married in Mauritius?

Have you decided to say yes and dream of a wedding on a paradise beach on the other side of the world?

Many French people are seduced by Mauricio to make this dream come true.

Once you have taken the steps, which are definitely quite simple, choose the place you want for the ceremony: your hotel, a catamaran, a beach next to the lagoon, an islet. This is the advantage of getting married in Mauritius, the registrar will receive you there.

For procedures.

5) Transfer from the airport

Mauritius International Airport (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport) is located in the southeast of Mauritius, approximately 1 hour from Flic en Flac by car and 1 hour and 15 minutes from the capital, Port-Louis.

You have several solutions to get from the airport to Trou d'Eau Douce, Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches or Flic-en-Flac, several solutions:

  • Car rental at the airport

Car rental is the most suitable for me. We are independent, the prices are reasonable.

Be careful, when booking with local companies, the prices are very attractive but some do not give you the deposit under the pretext of a shock or a scratch that was already there. Check approval and read notices before renting.

I haven't tried it, but according to many travelers AKD's rental company (link) is serious.

If you opt for security by renting to international companies, it will be more expensive but without bad surprises.

  • Transfer from the airport by taxi:

The taxi option is often preferred. It is true that trips are less expensive than in France and above all negotiable. You can get by for about 30-35 euros for a journey of about sixty kilometers, that is, a good crossing of the island!

  • Good to know about transportation in Mauritius

- Driving is on the left as in England, be careful, the reflections are not the same, especially when crossing a road on foot ...

- Beware of the many stray dogs on the roads.
- There is no lighting at night and you should know that some roads are in poor condition.

- "Driving Mauritius"; the horn warns you that they are reaching you, it is not an assault.
- Beware of very reckless two-wheelers!

  • Transporte en bus

The bus network is quite developed in Mauritius, they are private companies. This is the cheapest way and you will have a chance to discover the sporty driving of bus drivers! It is worth the trip, at least once.

And it's an opportunity to chat with the locals who will be happy to give you some tips on how to visit secret places like the blowing bridge, for example! To plan your bus trip.

  • Airport transportation

It is a means of transport that I have not tried but most hotels offer it. Otherwise you can book a shuttle service online here for example

In common transport, the price will be around 20/25 euros per person for an airport-Flic en Flac trip.

If you need a French-speaking driver to move around Mauritius, do not hesitate to contact Nus here, he offers tours of 1, 2 or 3 days to discover the island. For example, you can select 2 days and use these services on a Monday and a Thursday for example ... Do not hesitate to ask for a customized tour, know the island as your back.

6) Where to go out in Mauritius

Where to go out in Flic-en-Flac?

  • Garden of Le Twin

To experience a typical Mauritian evening and dance to the Sega, meet up at Twin's Garden on Friday night (Googlemap link), which offers local cuisine for around 20/25 euros for the buffet. Your meal will be accompanied by a Sega song and dance performance.

After the show, the dance floor is yours! Oh yeah ! This restaurant is run by French!

  • Bar Le Kenzi

Looking for a cozy little bar to have a good cocktail and listen to great music? See you at the Kenzi Bar (TripAdvisor link)!
Warm atmosphere, little concerts on Sunday nights and the garden is so nice!

Being the Breton owner, an original sign at the entrance of the bar indicates the distance between Flic-en-Flac and Lorient. And many other places ...

Where to go out in Grand Baie?

  • El Banana Beach Club

Since you are in Mauritius and you want to make the most of the outdoors, the Banana Beach Club will allow you to sample cocktails at its open air bar. The atmosphere is nice, the music very nice.

If you want to eat beforehand, the restaurant section Le Gourmet Grill will offer you its menu at affordable prices. (GoogleMap link - Where to go out in Grand Baie).

  • El bask

A little eager to eat French? As the name suggests, Le Bask offers a menu from the south west of France, dishes enriched with Espelette pepper.

  • Ti Kouloir

For typical Mauritian cuisine, go to Ti Kouloir and try the famous Mine Frit, a killer! The prices are more than cheap. Nice atmosphere because many locals also come to eat. This is the opportunity to start the discussion!

  • Twelfth day: Port-Louis market in the morning and lunch on the spot, the opportunity to discover the capital and the beach in the afternoon.

  • If I visit Mauritius for just one week?

Ideally, pack and unpack as little as possible, for a stay of 8 days in Mauritius, I advise not to make more than 2 adaptations.

Settle into Grand Baie for the first 3 days and take the opportunity to visit the grapefruit gardens and the Ile aux Cerfs. Then move on to Flic en Flac for 4-5 days. Take a day to visit the holy water fountain, a day to Chamarel, the land of the Seven Colors and Black River National Park, then a day to visit the south: Tamarin, Macondé and Souffleur.

A morning for the four terminal market and why not half a day in Grand Bassin! And beach for the rest.

The must-sees (GoogleMap link - The must-sees of Mauritius): Ile aux cerfs, Ile au clam and dolphins, Le souffleur, Black River National Park, Chamarel and the land of seven colors, Pamplemousses Beaches garden, Flic -en-Flac, Grand-Baie and Trou-aux-Biches

Mauricio auténtico (enlace de GoogleMap - Mauricio auténtico): Macondé, Tamarin, Quatre-Bornes, Le Souffleur, Grand Bassin.
