What will the weather be like in New York during August?
As with most cities and countries in the northern hemisphere, New York City August is the hottest time. Temperatures generally reach 28°C and go down to 21°C. The weather is therefore good and quite sunny in general. On the other hand, despite these pleasant temperatures, the month of August (like the month of July) is also the month of wetter of the year. So don't forget your umbrella and suitable clothes in your suitcase, because the rain can come quickly.
During your stay, take the time to discover iconic monuments and walk the main streets of New York. However, don't forget to hydrate regularly and to stay in the shade at the beginning of the afternoon (between 13 p.m. and 16 p.m.), because the sun is very strong during these few hours.
During the month of August, I also advise you not to take the New York subway. Indeed, the heat is very unpleasant.
During the day, you can go bathe. When you go to New York in August, you don't immediately think of beaches that the Big Apple offers us, and yet! These are generally very clean and pretty.
In the evening, the climate is very pleasant. You can therefore take advantage of New York evenings, participate in different concerts and festivals which will take place in famous places of the city.
New York in August: a little detour to the beach
A New York, les beaches are very busy during the summer period. These are spread over the different districts of New York (The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island) and allow tourists (and locals) to cool off and enjoy a pleasant moment with their family, in couple or friends. The beaches of New York are mostly very clean and have different services (barbecue, table, playgrounds…) very interesting to have a good time.
As for the water temperature, it varies depending on the beach, but in general it is around the 20°C. If you don't want to swim, you can always enjoy the sun to sunbathe or take a stroll along the beach. Many bars, ice cream parlors and restaurants are also located near New York's beaches.
Note: Coney Island beach is the most popular At New York. Located a few minutes from Manhattan, this beach is very welcoming and stretches over 6 kilometers in length.
A day at the amusement park
If you are in New York in August, I also recommend spending a day at Coney Island. Besides its beach, this place is also known for its incredible funfair. This Luna Park is very authentic and offers many attractions for adults and children. From thrill rides to family attractions, at Coney Island the whole family can have fun!
In general, this park is open from 12 p.m. to 20 p.m.

In summer, in New York, many cultural type events take place. A very large majority of them are also completely free! So, during your trip to New York in August, do not hesitate to take advantage!
Le Bryant Park Summer Film Festival
As the name suggests Bryant Park Summer Film Festival is held at Bryant Park from June to August. Also known as Bryant Park Movie Screenings, this event is highly regarded and popular in New York. The latter will offer open-air cinema screenings every Monday evening from dusk. Access to the park is possible from 17h and you can take your picnic and blankets with you. To ensure good seats, I advise you to arrive very early.
The films will start showing at nightfall (between 20 p.m. and 21 p.m.) and the evening will last until 23:30 p.m. Also be aware that if the weather conditions are not good, the film screening will be canceled and not postponed.
The program of the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival changes every year. On the other hand, you will never see a movie released a few months ago. Here, the goal is to go over old movies, dating from the years 1930 to 1990.
Le Met Opera In The Park
Le Met Opera In The Park are free operas that take place from from June 2019 At 20 o 'clock. They are celebrated in the main New York parks: Central Park, Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Miller Field in Staten Island. These representations are Free.
Le Mostly Mozart Festival
Le Mostly Mozart Festival takes place every summer in New York. Every year, musicians come to perform classics by Mozart, Beethoven or even Schubert. If you want to attend one of these shows, you will have to go to Lincoln Center, or Alice Tully Hall, New York State Theater, Avery Fisher Hall or John Jay College Theater.
Shakespeare in the Park
Shakespeare in the Park is a cultural and theatrical event that takes place every summer in Big Apple. During this event, various Shakespeare pieces will be performed in the heart of Central Park Delacorte Theater. Most of the time the play begins to be performed in broad daylight, but night falls during the performance.
A noter : le Shakespeare in the Park a lieu du Tuesday to Sunday evening. You will be able to access the theater from 19:30 p.m. and the show will start at 20 p.m.
Shakespeare in the Park has been taking place for over 50 years and attending one of these plays is truly a once in a lifetime experience! Great artists participate and every year thousands of tourists flock to celebrate Shakespeare and other great classics.
If you want to attend a Shakespeare in the Park play, you won't have to pay anything since this event is totally free. To get your tickets, you will either have to queue in the park or get them directly online. For my part, I recommend the second option. Indeed, queuing in the park will take you hours.
Le New York International Fringe Festival
Throughout the month of August, the New York International Fringe Festival takes place. It is the largest multidisciplinary festival in North America. Here, dance, theater and other disciplines are honored by companies from all over the world. Puppets, poetry, comedy and more will take place all over the city! Other activities will also be organized during this event: meetings with the artists, shows for children and much more!
Le Summer Streets
Do you want to walk around New York in peace? During three consecutive Saturdays (the dates for 2019 are not yet confirmed), do not hesitate to participate in the Summer Streets. During this event, several kilometers of roads will be closed to cars. You will therefore be able to walk or cycle in complete serenity. This route begins at Lafayette Street, towards the Brooklyn Bridge, then ascends downtown along Park Avenue to reach Central Park on East 72nd Street. These festivities usually start around 7am and end around 13pm.
New York in August: attend a concert or musical
During the month of August, concerts will therefore be organized in the Big Apple, but not only. Broadway shows will also be plentiful. Attend a Broadway musical is simply a magical experience! New York in August is also an opportunity to watch a baseball or American football game, the two popular sports in the United States. Plus, if you're in New York in August, you might also be able to catch a US Open Tennis match.
L’US Open de Tennis
Like every year, this Grand Slam tournament takes place in New York. The latter lasts two weeks and is the largest sporting event in the United States. TheUS Open de Tennis will take place from August 26 to September 8, 2019. So, if you are a fan of this sport or if you simply want to see great players compete, then this tournament will please you!
Where to buy tickets?
You can buy your tickets directly online. Your tickets will be sent directly to your home or by email. I advise you however, to opt for the electronic way (e-ticket) because it is the fastest solution and with it you will not need to pay the shipping costs. All tickets are delivered on time.
As stated before, this tournament lasts two weeks. You will therefore have to choose the dates on which you wish to attend a match. For the start of the US Open, tickets are cheaper than those for the championship. Day tickets are also more expensive, as you will be able to watch more matches. Matches will start from 11 a.m. until all scheduled fixtures for the day are played. Also in the evening, matches can be played. They will start around 19:00 p.m.
There are three kinds of tickets:
- Arthur Ashe, which guarantees you a fixed seat at the main stadium. Here, the most important matches take place.
- The Louis Armstrong which offers a better view of the stadium.
- The General Admission valid only valid for meetings that take place during the day.
Watch a baseball game
In August, the NBA will not have resumed. However, be aware that you can always attend a baseball game and support the two New York teams: the Yankees and the Mets. What are other things to do in New York in August?
In August, the weather is good. You can therefore, if you wish, take small boat cruises. You will also have the possibility to walk in bus Hop-On Hop-Off. These tourist buses are very pleasant and will allow you to discover all the symbolic places and monuments of New York. You will be installed in an open-top bus, an ideal point for taking pretty pictures!
