History of the Hamptons
If today the Hamptons are a wealthy vacation spot, this has not always been the case. Initially, the Hamptons were the land of colonists who cultivated the potato and from the XNUMXth century, large families in turn discovered the Hamptons. They decided to build large seaside villas there, mainly in the East Hampton and Southampton areas.
Over the years, painters also decided to settle in the region. Real estate prices continued to rise and new fortunes decided to choose the Hamptons for their vacation.
After the 2000s, Montauk (an area located in East Hampton) also became the new trendy place, real estate prices continued to rise and during the summer months, many celebrities stayed there. During the following years, Montauk and the Hamptons in general will see photographers, designers and many other artists.
Today East Hampton is the most desirable area for the wealthy and today the Hamptons represent a vintage lifestyle. Many social events are also organized there, but also charity galas, parties ...
How do I get to the Hamptons?
If you want to visit the Hamptons, three solutions are available to you to get there from New York:
The car
With car, you are independent and you visit the region as you see fit: you take the route that interests you, you leave and come back whenever you want. Depending on the number of people, you can hire a suitable car and the price varies depending on the rental company chosen.
For the journey time, it takes on average 2h30 (156 km approximately between Manhattan and the Hamptons), but this duration varies according to the traffic, if you make stops…
The bus
Another way to get to the Hamptons: the bus. Several companies offer to reach the region by bus, but the most interesting is Hampton Jitney. The bus serves seven stops in Manhattan and nine in the district of Queens (see the article on this district) and Brooklyn. The bus then stops at 31 locations on Long Island including Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk.
By bus, the Manhattan - Montauk trip takes 3h30 about and it will take $ 29 for one ride (or $ 58 for a return trip) if the reservation is made online ($ 33 if it is made directly on site).
The train
Le train is another alternative to consider when traveling to the Hamptons. Fast and convenient, the train puts 2h30 to reach Montauk and during the journey, 30 stops are planned. The line that connects Manhattan - the Hamptons is the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) and the price applied is $ 21.29 per trip.
To reach the Hamptons, several means of transport are therefore available. To choose one, take into account the number of people as well as your budget and if not, know that the seaplane or helicopter can also be used to reach the Hamptons from Manhattan. For the first, the trip lasts 45 minutes and for the second, it takes about ten minutes. But as you can imagine, these means of transport are more expensive than those presented above.

The best restaurants to eat
In every town of the Hamptons, you will find a restaurant to eat. So if you are at Montauk, I advise you The Saltbox (99 S Edgemere St, Montauk, NY 11954), an establishment that serves seafood or Swallow East Restaurant which offers a varied menu: seafood, fish, salads… This restaurant is located at 474 W Lake Dr, Montauk.
A Amagansett, le restaurant Lobster roll (1980 Montauk Hwy, Amagansett) welcomes you in a casual yet chic decor. It serves seafood (their lobster is delicious) and seafood dishes. And if this restaurant rings a bell, it's normal, because it appeared in The Affair!
Otherwise, if you want to eat a good burger, go to Mr. Burger whose address is: 1742 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike in Sag Harbor.
